Conservación y Desarrollo

Mission & History

Founded in 1992, Conservación y Desarrollo (CyD) is an independent, nonprofit, nongovernmental citizen’s group, headquartered in Quito, Ecuador. Its volunteer and paid staff includes social scientists, agronomists, biologists, engineers, and lawyers. The group collaborates with government agencies and the private sector with a mission “to promote sustainable development and the rational use of natural resources, and to raise public consciousness about resource management.”

C&D focuses on ecotourism, agriculture and community-based projects. It collaborates with several international organizations including the Rainforest Alliance, and is working with the government of Ecuador to develop a national policy for sustainable agricultural production. In order to fulfill its mission, C&D assists growers seeking to improve their systems of production and management to establish just supply chains, technology transference processes and environmental certification, among other activities. All of C&D’s work is community-based, and situated in high biodiversity areas of Ecuador.
